One
of the first female singers in Latin music that
I ever saw was Celia Cruz, who, in 1962, was singing
with the band La Sonora Matancera. Her showmanship
and greatness as a singer helped peak my interest
in pursuing a career building percussion instruments.
In time I had the honor of meeting this great
singer. Unfortunately, due to my lack of fluency
in Spanish, I was never able to develop as close
a friendship with Celia as I would have liked.
Celia
continues to serve as an inspiration to me by
showing how someone could be so productive and
influencial even well into her 70s. Fortunately,
she will live on forever in her music, and continue
to inspire future generations.
She will be missed.
