When I met Machito in 1969, he already was a Latin
Music legend, and I was fortunate enough to hear
his band play, most notably, in a small lounge
on Westchester Avenue in the Bronx. During the
years that we were friends, he was involved in
a Bronx community program called SERA, for which
he served meals to the elderly. Even though he
had gained renown for his influence on music and
for the music he created, he was never too busy
to help those in need.
I considered him a good friend, and I am especially
proud of having photographed him with the Grammy
he was so thrilled to have won.
