Tabla
great Zakir Hussain visited with the staff at
LP to lend insight to the drums of his culture
and to give us some insight into his varied career
than not only covers the traditional music of
India but orchestrations for film scores and working
in the eclectic music of Micky Hart's Planet Drum.
In addition to his musical work, he has appeared
in the movie Heat and Dust. Zakir said you would
have a tough time recognizing him in that movie
as he had to put on some weight and slick back
his hair.
Zakir's
father, the great Ala Racca, was the first
musician to bring Western recognition to tabla
when he worked with Ravi Shankar in the 1960's.
Zakir
was drawn to LP's patented Granite Blocks that
he says are perfect for playing with finger technique.
He noted how even the sound was from the set of
blocks. Playing this array of blocks, he added
the LP Udu drum to his performance to make a magical
blend of sounds that could only come from a master
of this caliber. |
