I first met
Edmar Castañeda at a musical evening
at the renowned sax player, Paquito D'Rivera's
house in April on 2001. I was blown away
by the incongruity of this very young
talent playing an unusual instrument.
His instrument is the Colombian harp
and he has taken this instrument to new
highs. He plays the bass lines with his
left hand. You can't believe there isn't
a bass player in the band. His power
trio has toured extensively from Panama
to the Umbria Jazz Festival. They are
in constant demand. The group consists
of Marshall Gilkes on trombone and David
Silliman on percussion. David is not
only a drumset player but a percussionist
who assembles a broad array of percussion
instruments ranging from the LP cajon
to the Utters giving the group the colors
and dynamics fitting the genius of Edmar.
