The
Fania All Stars performed recently at Madison
Square Garden in New York City. Johnny
Pacheco and Jerry
Masucci founded Fania Records in 1964 in order
to cultivate a salsa sound that combined New York,
African, and Latin Caribbean influences. Some
of the musicians signed to the label over the
years have included Pete
"El Conde" Rodriguez, Larry Harlow,
Willie Colon, Barry
Rogers, Jimmy Sabater, Eddie
Palmieri, and Mongo Santamaria, to name only
a few.The Fania All Stars have been performing
for over three decades, and have contributed a
great deal to salsa music. The
country's most popular Puerto Rican bands provided
five hours of magnificent music during the evening.
The concert opened with El Gran Combo, and Felipe
Luciano and Al Sharpton provided brief political
speeches. Contributing musicians were: Johnny
Pacheco, Larry Harlow, Hector Casanova, Ismael
Quintana, Ruben Blades, Bobby
Cruz, Domingo Quiñones, Adalberto Santiago,
Nicky Marrero, Eddie
Montalvo, Papo Luca, Bobby Valentin, Cheo
Feliciano and Junior Gonzalez. Check
